Liverpool head to St James’ Park for a match against struggling Newcastle.

Both sides in the last month had heavy cup defeats with Liverpool’s 6-3 Carling Cup exit to Arsenal being swiftly followed by Newcastle’s 5-1 FA Cup defeat at home to Birmingham City.

Newcastle have had major injury problems this season with former Liverpool striker Michael Owen ruled out for most of this season recovering from knee surgery. Republic of Ireland international Damien Duff has also been on the sidelines injured for most of this season and striker Shola Ameobi is recovering after an operation. They are also without goalkeeper Shay Given who is recovering from a groin injury so Steve Harper is expected to start in goal against Liverpool.

Geordies boss Glenn Roeder has had to blood a lot of youngsters this season and the team’s form has suffered because of the injury problems.

Earlier this season Liverpool beat Newcastle 2-0 at Anfield which included a sensational goal from Xabi Alonso from the halfway line. Dirk Kuyt also netted his first goal in a red shirt.

Last season at St James’ Park Liverpool won 3-1 with goals from Peter Crouch, Steven Gerrard and Djibril Cisse.

Liverpool head to Upton Park to face Alan Curbishley’s struggling Hmmers.

West Ham have struggled since they met Liverpool in last season’s FA Cup Final and Curbishley moved into the Upton Park hot seat just before the turn of the new year when Alan Pardew was sacked.

The Hammers started the new year with a 6-0 defeat at Reading and confidence needs restoring. They have strengthened the team since then with the capture of Luis Boa Morte from Fulham. Boa Morte is one of five players Curbishley has brought into Upton Park during the transfer window. The other players are Lucas Neill, Calum Davenport, Nigel Quashie and striker Kepa Blanco on loan from Sevilla.

Earlier this season a sensational goal from Daniel Agger was the highlight of Liverpool’s 2-1 win at Anfield. Bobby Zamora had given the Hammers the lead but Agger equalised and then Peter Crouch scored at the Kop end to seal the three points. Dirk Kuyt also made his Liverpool debut in the game as an impressive second half substitute.
