Liverpool 0 – 1 Manchester United – Full Match : EPL 3 Mar 07

March 5, 2007

Man United rode their luck to snatch a fortunate victory and take
a giant stride towards
the title with John O’Shea’s injury-time winner.

United lost Wayne Rooney through injury and saw Paul Scholes sent off
late on for a clash
with Xabi Alonso as Liverpool dominated for long spells.

But substitute O’Shea pounced after Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina fumbled
Cristiano Ronaldo’s free-kick.

Edwin Van der Sar had earlier saved brilliantly from Peter Crouch.

Sir Alex Ferguson celebrated the winner in his own unique fashion on the
touchline, and it was easy to see
why after his side had somehow fashioned
a crucial three points.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez resisted the temptation to field an
under-strengthside ahead of the
Champions League meeting with Barcelona
at Anfield on Tuesday.

And they had the better of a patchy, and predictably hard-fought, first 45 minutes.

John Arne Riise was within inches of putting Liverpool ahead after 26 minutes,
sending a low,
driven free-kick narrowly wide.

United escaped again four minutes later when Craig Bellamy robbed the
uncertain Nemanja Vidic,
but his cross flashed along the six-yard line with
Dirk Kuyt unable to apply the final touch.

Liverpool were rarely troubled, although Jamie Carragher had to intervene
bravely to deny Rooney
as he shaped to shoot inside the area.

The momentum was all with Liverpool as the second half started and they did
everything but score
as United were pinned back.

Steven Gerrard shot over from 12 yards, and Bellamy forced a save from
Van der Sar low down
before having a close-range effort ruled out for offside.

Riise then fired a rising drive just over the top from 25 yards as Liverpool
dominated a strangely lack-lustre United.

The game had become a disappointing stalemate, with United replacing
an ineffective
Henrik Larsson – on his final Premiership appearance before
returning to Helsingborg – with Louis Saha.

And United suffered a blow with 18 minutes left when Rooney limped off with
a gashed leg
and injury to his knee after a high challenge with Carragher.

Saha was at the centre of penalty claims with 12 minutes left when he tumbled
under a
challenge from Daniel Agger, but referee Martin Atkinson was unmoved.

United then threatened a smash-and-grab when the previously unemployed
Reina needed to
scoop away a header from Ronaldo.

Scholes and Alonso had been involved in a succession of spats, and the United
star saw red
after he raised his hand in the direction of the Spanish midfield man
though no contact was made.

Van der Sar then produced a pivotal moment, diving acrobatically to his left to
palm away Crouch’s shot.

And just as United seemed happy to settle for a point, Reina dropped Ronaldo’s
free-kick at the feet of
O’Shea, who slammed his finish into the roof of the net.

Liverpool consolidated their grip on third place in the Premiership by coasting to a convincing 4-0 victory over Sheffield United at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Robbie Fowler’s first half spot-kick double (20 and 25) and second half strikes from Sami Hyypia (70) and Steven Gerrard (73) fired the Reds to an emphatic win that moves them to within three points of second-placed Chelsea and seven clear of fourth-placed Arsenal.

Having sent shockwaves reverberating around Europe in midweek, a rousing reception from the Anfield gallery greeted the returning heroes as they resumed their ‘bread and butter’ quest on the domestic front.

With a couple of big games looming, Benitez shuffled his pack and veteran Kop favourite Fowler was one of seven changes to the starting eleven that helped defeat Barcelona in the Nou Camp.

Javier Mascherano was handed his Reds debut in the centre of midfield alongside Steven Gerrard and, with Pepe Reina’s wife about to give birth, Jerzy Dudek also made a rare start between the sticks.

Hyypia was recalled to the centre of defence in place of Daniel Agger, Mark Gonzalez and Jermaine Pennant came in to patrol the flanks, while Fowler was partnered by Peter Crouch in attack.

It was on the opening day of the season that Neil Warnock’s newly promoted Blades blunted Liverpool’s start to the campaign by holding them to a 1-1 draw at Brammall Lane and, given the much-changed line-up, hopes must have been high in the away dug-out of a repeat result.

But Rafa’s squad rotation policy worked a treat and it was the Reds who stuck the knife in to draw first blood after 20 minutes.

Robert Kozluk wrestled Gerrard to the floor as a corner was floated in from the right. Referee Steve Bennett immediately pointed to spot and Fowler made no mistake in expertly despatching the spot-kick to the left of Paddy Kenny’s outstretched arms.

Seven minutes later the Reds number nine doubled Liverpool’s advantage in almost identical circumstances. Gerrard was brought down in the box for a second time, this time by Nick Montgomery, and Fowler comfortably completed the task again, opting for the opposite corner on this occasion as Kenny dived the wrong way.

With the points safe, the main focus now was on how many Liverpool could score and the only surprise was that it took until twenty minutes from the end before the United net was pierced again.

Hyypia pounced on a loose ball as the visitors struggled to clear a corner and the big Finn’s goalward bound shot was deflected in off the legs of a defender for 3-0.

Three minutes later Gerrard completed the scoring and put the seal on a satisfactory afternoon when he drove the ball home from the right edge of the area.

Saturday 10 February 2007 15:00 , Barclays Premiership

A momentous week ended in disappointment as Liverpool squandered a goal lead to gift Newcastle victory at a rain-swept St James Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds dominated for long periods but were unable to build on Craig Bellamy’s 6th minute opener against his former club and ultimately slipped to a 2-1 defeat.

Obafemi Martins capitalised on a defensive blunder to level twenty minutes later and Nolberto Solano completed the hosts’ comeback by converting from the penalty spot midway through the second half.

It’s a result that severely weakens Liverpool’s hopes of catching the top two in the Premiership and quashes the feel-good factor created by the takeover events of just a few days previous.

With Xabi Alonso suspended, Momo Sissoko made his long-awaited return from the shoulder injury that had kept him out since November, while the only other change from the eleven that started last week’s derby was the inclusion of Bolo Zenden in place of Peter Crouch as Rafael Benitez opted for a return to the tried and trusted 4-4-2 formation.

Heavy rain had put this game in doubt but, after two inspections, referee Mark Halsey eventually declared the pitch playable. The wet weather continued, however, and conditions were far from ideal come kick-off time but it was the Reds who adapted better.

On a playing surface that was understandably heavy, attempting to make even the simplest of passes was, at times, difficult on the sodden St James’ turf and players clattered into each other as they struggled to keep their feet in the mud.

Liverpool got quickly into their stride though. Jermaine Pennant was particularly lively early on and it was he who created the opening goal, bypassing Celestine Babyaro with ease on the right edge of the Newcastle area and picking out the unmarked Bellamy on the edge of the six-yard box. The home side had enough bodies back to have been confident of clearing the danger but the ex-Magpie picked his spot and guided the ball through a forest of legs to find the back of the net.

Not surprisingly, Bellamy’s goal was greeted by a chorus of boos from the Gallowgate fans who once sang his name and they continued to barrack his every touch. But the impish Welshman refused to hide and continued to be the chief tormentor of the home defence during a spell in which Liverpool should have increased their lead.

Instead, against the run of play, the next goal came about in bizarre circumstances at the opposite end. Pepe Reina reacted to a Newcastle through ball by rushing off his line to clear but the ball rebounded off the in-rushing Martins and, as a result, the Nigerian striker was left with the easy task of slotting the ball into a gaping net.

A brief home rally then saw Milner flash a long-range punt narrowly wide but Liverpool soon re-assumed the dominance they’d enjoyed prior to the shock equalising goal. Main man Bellamy was at the centre of almost every Reds attack and on another day he may have walked away with the match ball before half-time.

He twice came close to restoring the lead, first with an effort that was cleared off the line by Titus Bramble and then a shot that came frustratingly back off the bar. The Magpies were on the rack and keeper Steve Harper also had to save from Zenden as they found themselves pinned back in their own half.

The pressure continued immediately after the restart and Dirk Kuyt spurned a glorious opportunity when he fired wide from inside the box following a terrific Cruyff-esque turn.

At this point, Liverpool looked the most likely winners but Newcastle were allowed to gradually force their way back into the game and their revival was rewarded when they took the lead from the penalty spot. John Arne Riise was adjudged to have tripped Steven Taylor and Solano sent Reina the wrong way from the spot.

As the game neared its conclusion Liverpool became less effective as an attacking force and, as the final whistle sounded, were left kicking themselves for not having made the points safe when they had the chance.
