LIVERPOOL VS PORTSMOUTH

LIVERPOOL VS PORTSMOUTH
Saturday 22 December 2007 15:00

Liverpool welcome Harry Redknapp’s high-flying Portsmouth to Anfield determined to give the home crowd some much-needed Christmas cheer following last weekend’s disappointing 1-0 loss to Manchester United.

The narrow defeat to Alex Ferguson’s side was our first league defeat on home soil this season, and followed on from the 3-1 reversal at Reading.

It is a run of results that has seen Rafael Benitez’s men slip 10 points behind league leaders Arsenal and means the game in hand they have over the other title contenders has become even more significant.

A run of victories over the festive period, beginning with Pompey, will go some way to enhancing our chances of catching the Gunners and the Reds received an early Christmas gift during the past week, with the news that Xabi Alonso is fit following the metatarsal injury he picked up in the 1-1 draw with Arsenal on October 28.

The two sides met earlier in the campaign when Pepe Reina’s penalty save from Kanu secured a 0-0 draw for the Reds at Fratton Park.

The visitors are currently sitting in seventh place, level on 30 points with Liverpool, and they have been inspired form on the road of late, with crushing victories over Aston Villa and Newcastle United.

Liverpool will have to be at their best if they are to secure their first win in four attempts against Harry Redknapp’s side and get their Premier League title hopes back on track.

ITANDJE: I’D BE MAD NOT TO LOVE IT HERE

December 20, 2007
Charles Itandje insists he is enjoying every minute of his Liverpool career and believes he would be ‘mad’ to regret joining the club – despite playing understudy to Reds number one Pepe Reina.
The former Lens stopper, who played only his third match for Rafael Benitez’s men in the 2-0 Carling Cup defeat at Chelsea last night, admits it has been frustrating at times watching from the bench.

But he accepts that he always knew he would have to be patient at a club the size of Liverpool and is confident he has now adapted to his new life in England.

“The fact I don’t play is not easy to experience,” said Itandje. “The most frustrating thing is to wait and never know when you will play.

“But I knew that when I signed here. I have to be patient.

“The first step was to adapt to a new country, a new language and a new league.

“Of course, at a certain time, if you don’t play, you have to ask yourself the right questions, but it is not topical.

“A lot of people advised me against coming to Liverpool, saying I will never play.

“Do I have any regrets? I would be mad. There are people unemployed, and I am at Liverpool. I am enjoying every minute I get.

Carling Cup: CHELSEA VS LIVERPOOL

December 19, 2007
CHELSEA VS LIVERPOOL
Wednesday 19 December 2007 19:45

Liverpool will be hoping they can maintain their impressive cup form against Chelsea when they travel to Stamford Bridge for a mouthwatering Carling Cup quarter-final tie.

The Reds have held the Indian sign over the Londoners in knockout competitions in the past few seasons and they will be aiming to continue that against new boss Avram Grant and co.

Although Chelsea have suffered at the hands of Liverpool in both the Champions League and the FA Cup, the last time they met in the Carling Cup was in the 2005 final, when Jose Mourinho’s men clinched a 3-2 win after extra-time.

This time around the Reds have reached the last eight with an impressive Torres-inspired victory at Reading and a narrow 2-1 win against Robbie Fowler’s Cardiff, but there is no doubt a trip to Stamford Bridge will provide our sternest test yet.

Chelsea needed two late goals to edge into this stage after Leicester had looked like causing a massive upset when they led 3-2 with just three minutes remaining.

But it was not meant to be and after Shevchenko levelled, Frank Lampard snatched a winner in injury-time to clinch his hat-trick.

Both sides have strength-in-depth and there are likely to be a number of big names on show as Liverpool aim to snare their first win at Stamford Bridge since Bruno Cheyrou gave Gerard Houllier’s men a 1-0 victory in January, 2004.

UCL Group A :OLYMPIQUE MARSEILLE VS LIVERPOOL

December 10, 2007
OLYMPIQUE MARSEILLE VS LIVERPOOL
Tuesday 11 December 2007 19:45

It’s Matchday Six in Group A of the Champions League and nothing less than a win will do if Liverpool are to keep their hopes of a sixth European Cup success alive into the new year.

Rafa Benitez’s side were faced with a mountain to climb after losing 2-1 away to Besiktas on Matchday Three but after a record-breaking win over the Turks at Anfield and a thumping 4-1 triumph against Porto, the Reds know that victory at the Stade Velodrome will book their place in the knockout stages and prove their doubters wrong.

Liverpool’s precarious position in the group is as a result of the 1-0 defeat they suffered against Eric Gerets’ side when they visited Anfield in October, a match Rafa Benitez admitted was one of the poorest performances of his time at the club.

But the Reds are a different side to the one that suffered such a major setback against their Gallic counterparts and their away form this season, Besiktas aside, has been magnificent.

To continue that they will have to improve on their poor record against the French outfit, especially if they are to return home with the three points that will see them through to the knockout phase.

The sides have met on just three occasions but surprisingly the Reds have yet to win, managing a draw and two defeats, one of which saw them eliminated from the fourth round of the Uefa Cup back in 2004.

Benitez and co will be hoping it’s a case of fourth time lucky if they are to prevent a Group stage exit for the first time since 2002.

EPL 07/08 Matchday 16: READING VS LIVERPOOL

December 6, 2007
READING VS LIVERPOOL
Saturday 8 December 2007 17:15

Fernando Torres and co travel to Reading hoping to secure a similar result to the one they achieved in the Carling Cup back in September.

The Reds booked their place in the fourth round of the competition courtesy of an enthralling 4-2 victory over Steve Coppell’s side, with Torres netting what will hopefully prove to be the first of many hat-tricks in a Liverpool shirt.

It was a game that summed up the Reds’ improved away form this season and highlighted the defensive frailties that have troubled the Royals in what is only their second ever Premier League campaign.

Steve Coppell’s side have suffered some heavy defeats against the likes of Arsenal, Blackburn and Portsmouth in particular, but despite having one of the worst goal differences in the league they are still clear of the relegation zone.

If they are to improve that statistic against Liverpool they will have to do something they have never managed against Rafa Benitez’s men and stop the Reds from taking all three points.

In just four previous meetings Liverpool have a 100 per cent record and with one of the best away records in the league, the Reds will be confident of continuing their winning run at the home of the Berkshire outfit.
